Whang Bo-ryung Biography

Whang Bo-ryung is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on February 26, 1970 in Seoul, South Korea. Whang Bo-ryung (Korean: hwangboryeong ; born 26 February 1970) is an American South Korean singer as well as songwriter, painter and musician. She is the vocalist of the lead and the founder of the group Smacksoft. She released her debut self- titled album Cat With Three Ears in the month of April, 1998.

Then, in 2008 she went back to Seoul and recorded SmackSoft 2.5, her EP. SmackSoft 2.5 that she dropped in January of 2009, with an new Smacksoft group.

In April and August 2012, she joined other indie singers, led by Song Eun-ji, to perform three concerts and release the album Please Talk, to benefit comfort women.

Her art work has been shown with others, including a joint exhibition on January 1–20, 2013, “Rockstar”, at the Gallery Toast in Bangbae-dong Seoul; her contribution was a painting of Brian Eno. She has held a number of solo exhibits, including one held December 20–31, 2015, at the Namsan gallery Daeppang Four Studio Gallery, which included concert performances.

She came back in Korea in the latter part of 1990 and began performing as a solo performer, performing many live shows on the guitar in Hongdae. She claimed that the vibe was different in the past there were fewer bands and fans found her captivating due to the New York punk look – with piercings and hair that was vibrant. In 1998 she released her first self-titled album Cat with Three Ears and a follow-up album “Sun Sign”, that featured her newly formed group Smacksoft and the band’s full name of “Whang Bo-ryung = Smacksoft” and who performed with her on the track that she released. After touring with Smacksoft throughout South Korea and Japan, she took a few months to relax, and in 2003 her return in New York and the Pratt Institute for a course in sculpture. She received an B.F.A. in 2007.

Whang was born in Seoul and moved in Busan during the 5th grade of the elementary school. At the age of 15 years old, she moved in America. As a soloist since the 1990s, Whang’s style of music was influenced by punk and early German industrial techno music. She writes the majority of her own music , which she creates for herself as well as for her group. She refers to Bach as a major influence on her musical style, and life itself. Kim Young-jin from The Korea Times and Sabrina Hill of Groove Korea magazine have labeled the avant-garde of sound.

In 2010, a Smacksoft album, Shines in the Dark, was nominated for Best Modern Rock Album by the Korean Music Awards.
