Werner Sobek is known for his eco-friendly and self-sufficient prototype homes like R 128 or H16. One of the most well-known concepts of Werner Sobek is “R-129” that uses a skin of polyurethane with a carbon fibre frame, creating walls that are thinner than eggshells. The commitment to sustainability can be seen through his involvement with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Nachhaltiges Bauen) and was one of the co- founded on July 7, 2007. He was a part of the board of directors of the DGNB from June 2013 to June 2013 and served as the organization’s president from April 2008 until June 2010. In December of 2011, he established his own organization, the Stuttgart Institute of Sustainability (SIS) an association that is non-profit that aims to promote research into sustainable building methods. He delivered a keynote speech and was a co-presenter in workshops on reducing CO2 with technology that produces zero emission at the 3rd International Holcim Forum 2010 in Mexico City and is on the jury for the world-wide Holcim Awards 2012.

Since 1994, he’s been an associate professor in the University of Stuttgart (successor to Frei Otto) and director of the Institute for Lightweight Structures and of the Central Laboratory for Structural Engineering. He joined the University in 2000. was appointed the chair held by Jorg Schlaich and merged his Institute for Lightweight Structures and the Institute for Construction and Design into the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK). As a research institute and teaching the ILEK is located at the University of Stuttgart unites the element of design that is prominent in architecture, with the emphasis on analysis and construction from structural engineering aswell in material science. Based on an inter- disciplinary and goal-oriented approach the institute is involved with the development of concepts for every type of construction and load-bearing structures that use various types of materials. The focus areas span design and construction using glass and textiles up to the creation of innovative structures that are reinforced or prestressed concrete. From the individual components to the overall structure, the focus is on the optimization of the design and construction with regard to energy and material use in terms of durability and reliability, recyclability , and sustainability for the environment. The outcomes of this research can be found in the bi-lingual (German/English) serial of the Institute (IL) or are published separately in reports of research on specific subjects.
