Waldman (born Wendy Steiner) was raised within The Los Angeles area. The family she grew up in was an acoustic family environment. Her dad Fred Steiner was a composer who wrote the theme tune of Perry Mason and The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Her mother was an accomplished violinist. In 1969, she was married to her first husband, Ken Waldman, and changed her name to Wendy Waldman.
The first recordings of Waldman were recorded in the year 1970, as a member of Bryndle. Other members of the group were Karla Bonoff Andrew Gold, and Kenny Edwards. The group broke up and Bryndle was signed to Warner Bros. Records. Bryndle came back together in the early 1990s and released two albums before breaking up again in the mid 2000s.
Waldman left the Warner Bros. label in 1979. In 1982 she moved to Nashville to focus on songwriting.
