Kimberly Ann Ponca, known as Wendy was born on the 20th of June, 1960 in Texas to Barbara Ann (nee Furr) and Carl Ponca. She was raised at the McDonald Observatory near Fort Davis, Texas. Her father, who was an Osage Nation artist and teacher who was born within the Osage Reservation in Fairfax, Oklahoma met her mother, who was an interior designer, when they were studying at school at the Kansas City Institute of Technology and Design. After finishing her first degree she went to Ft. Davis Central High School prior to beginning her studies in art in the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She took an art course called “Traditional Techniques” under Sandy Wilson who had succeeded the instructor, Josephine Myers-Wapp (Comanche/Sac and Fox) who had recently had retired. In 1977 as part of an outreach program for the community the IAIA’s fashion showcase took place at the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Division with Ponca as the host. After graduating from IAIA In 1977, the artist went on to study the art of New York and weaving in Greece. Then, she enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute, where she graduated with a master’s in 1982. Fiber arts . She then earned a master’s of art therapy from Southwestern College of Santa Fe.

After she completed her bachelor’s program, Ponca was employed in the field of costume design for the Santa Fe Opera in 1982. At the same time she established Waves of the Earth Fashion Group to sell her fashion collections. In the final week of the season of opera she was appointed as her replacement in her “Traditional Techniques” course at IAIA. She taught classes on Fashion Design, where she was known for her emphasis on tailoring, patternmaking and assessing the strength of clothes. In 1987 she created the “Traditional Techniques” course was changed to Fiber Arts which allowed credit transfer for other institutions. It also included an emphasis on Native American media, like weaving and beadwork techniques in addition to dyeing, manipulation of fibers and design for three-dimensional and two-dimensional work. Ponca along with her fellow students presented Fashion shows with the Waves of the Earth banner to provide students with exposure to market their products. They also took part in the Southwest Association for Indian Arts’ regular Santa Fe Indian Market (SWAIA Market) fashion show that included clothes created from IAIA students.

In 1995, Ponca was commissioned to create four blankets by Pendleton Woolen Mills for a special edition series. The blankets were featured at an exhibition hosted by the American Textile History Museum in 2000. After a stint teaching at the University of Las Vegas, Ponca moved to Fairfax, Oklahoma, and has continued to design and exhibit her creations. She has served as the Director of Development for Tulsa’s National Indian Monument Institute. Ponca’s collection Wedding Clothes of the Earth and Sky People was exhibited at the Osage Tribal Museum in 2013. In 2016, Pendleton released another limited edition blanket designed by Ponca with the proceeds designated to benefit the Osage Nation Foundation. That same year, she exhibited at Philbrook Museum in the Native Fashion Now showing, which was created by the Peabody Essex Museum and toured the country before being exhibited at the National Museum of the American Indian of the Smithsonian Institution. Ponca has works displayed at IAIA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and the National Museum of the American Indian.

In her capacity as a fashion designer the Ponca was adamant about exhibiting her work at fashion shows instead of galleries because gallery owners preferred stereotyped Native clothes and were resistant to the addition of influences from outside. In exhibiting her work during the Santa Fe Indian Market, Ponca won first place ribbons for modern design every year from 1982 to 1987. After being a part of SWAIA Market for seven years, she decided to try other venues. SWAIA Market over seven years she decided to look at different venues to broaden her options. In the late 1980s, she founded Native Influx that was later changed to Native Uprising. The group was a platform for artists model, designers, and artists to be part of the creation and making money from their events. This was the very first form of collaboration among Native American artists and founding members comprised Marcus Amerman (Choctaw), RoseMary Diaz (Santa Clara Tewa), Jackie Kee, Patricia Michaels (Taos Pueblo), Char Romero, and Carol Sandoval. Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee Nation) was an advisor and aided the group. Their primary goal was to establish an avenue to allow Native Americans to compete in the fashion world while combining cutting-edge design and American Indian customary symbols and customs and practices.

She continued participating in high fashion events, such as the Indian Chic: An American Indian Fashion Show hosted by the Denver Art Museum in 1998, as well as Culture Embodied and Culture Embodied II, for which she also directed for IAIA in 2000. Culture Embodied was held in Albuquerque and the second show corresponded with the annual Santa Fe Indian Market.
