Wendy Lill (born November 2 1950) is a Canadian screenwriter, playwright and radio dramatist. She served in the capacity of an NDP Member of the Parliament from 1997 until 2004. Her stage productions have been seen in theatres all over Canada and internationally in countries like Scotland, Denmark and Germany. A lot of her plays examine the gap between the oppressed and the powerful by examining, for example the abuse and racism of Canada’s indigenous peoples as well as the suffering of handicapped people children, sexual abuse of children and the fight to protect women’s rights. Her plays have been selected in the Governor General’s Awards. Sisters, a play that dramatizes the devastation to humankind of a convent-run indigenous residential school, was awarded an labatt’s Canadian Play Award at the Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Festival. The adaptation by Lill of Sisters for television won her the Gemini Award in 1992.
Lill was also journalist in CBC Radio in Winnipeg before making the move towards Winnipeg, Manitoba capital of 1979, where she was the producer of broadcast documentaries on Our Native Land, a national CBC Radio program about Canada’s indigenous peoples. Her documentary, Who’s George Forest? was awarded the ACTRA Award in 1981. The radio show she created, Shorthanded also won an ACTRA the same year.
Lill met CBC producer, Richard Starr in Winnipeg and they married in 1982, moving east to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick before settling in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia with their sons Samuel and Joseph. Samuel has Down’s syndrome and both Lill and Starr are well known for their advocacy on behalf of people living with disabilities.
In 1982, her first play, On the Line was staged in Winnipeg. It was based on a strike by immigrant women working in the garment industry and has been variously described as one-sided and propagandistic. According to one account, Lill’s businessman father suggested that in successful drama, even the villains have to be real, a piece of advice that she apparently took to heart.
Lill created the first of her plays in 1979. On the Line, while working for The CBC In Winnipeg. The play concerns the striking of immigrants working in the women working in the garment industry in Winnipeg. Her next work is The Fighting Days (1985) that examined the early days of the Canadian Suffrage Movement. The Monodrama The Occupation of Heather Rose (1987) is inspired by her experiences of living in Northern Ontario. The play tells the story of a young white idealistic nurse who goes for work at Snake Lake Reservation. Snake Lake Reservation. The play was nominated to win a Governor General Award. Memories of You (1989) is about the controversial life of woman actress Elizabeth Smart. It was nominated to win the Chalmers Canadian Play Award. Sisters (1991) is a story that follows the events that lead to an incident that saw the burning of a school in the hands of a religious nun who taught in the institution. All Fall Down (1994) is a drama about a daycare worker charged with sexual assault and the consequence. She also developed an e-radio drama loosely based off her own experience, Backbencher, that aired on CBC Radio One in 2010. The show has been renewed by CBC for additional 12 episodes, and the entire 20-episode series could be seen through Radio One and the Sirius network in the year 2011.

Lill’s initial involvement in politics began in the 1970s in the 1970s when she joined NDP’s Left-Wing Waffle movement. In the years following she continued to work for the NDP performing everything from door-to-door canvassing, to organizing fundraisers in support of the group. Alexa McDonough, the NDP’s federal leader , contacted Lill to run for office in the federal election in 1997. In 1997, Lill had finished writing Corker an eminent play that depicts how the cuts in government spending impact vulnerable people. “It’s about the same theme I always write about,” Lill said to an local journalist, “the big divide between the wealthy and the common people, and what happens if you aren’t happy with the current situation you have to make a difference in the world. I think I’ve thought it was the right time to test if I believed my own declarations.”
Wendy Lill was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, the daughter of Edwin Henry Lill and Margaret Galbraith Gordon. Her family relocated from Vancouver to London, Ontario when she was five years old. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Political Science in 1971 from York University in 1971. After graduating, she traveled Europe and worked as a waitress for cocktails and started writing poetry. In search of a change from Toronto, Lill moved north to Kenora, Ontario in 1977 in which she was employed as an expert in mental health. “That was a silly job for me because I had no experience and I wasn’t that type of person,” Lill spoke to an interviewer afterward. “But I did it for six months, basically trying to ascertain whether a Canadian Mental Health Association would be useful in Northern Ontario. Well, that’s sort of like saying, ‘Would an aspirin be useful in Bangladesh?'” Lill found that there were 44 organizations in Kenora and none of them was efficient in addressing the socio-economic issues which led to alcoholism and violence.
Before writing her first produced play, On the Line, based on a strike by female garment workers in Manitoba, Lill worked as a journalist, documentary- maker and dramatist for CBC Radio in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Among other things, she covered a paper mill strike in Kenora, Ontario and produced documentaries for Our Native Land, a national, weekly program about Canada’s indigenous peoples. Her documentary Who is George Forest? and her radio drama Shorthanded won ACTRA Awards in 1981. Her screenplay Ikwe, about Métis women, was part of a National Film Board series which received a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival in 1986.
