She earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary in 1989. In 2001, she was inducted into the University of Alberta’s Sports Hall of Fame. Today she is a coach in Seattle, Washington.
Clarkson was the first player to win a single Canadian title at the women’s singles tournament in 1976. She was an amateur champion earlier in the year. The same year, she was the winner of at the Canadian Open. The year 1977 was the last time she was in the quarterfinals of All England.

Through the 70s she picked up badminton. She took home the 1975 Canadian singles junior title in badminton. Together with Tracey Vanwassenhove, she took home her junior doubles contest. Along with Cam Dalgleish, she won the mixed doubles competition.
She was a champion in 1976. was awarded the Canadian Ladies Singles title. In the following year, she took home the Badminton Pan Am Championship.
In 1979, and 1980, she won top ladies’ singles at the nationals and, with Claire Backhouse, she won top Doubles and, with Greg Carter, top mixed doubles.
