Casares is the oldest of four children from an ancestry of sheep ranchers from Patagonia, Argentina. At the time of High School, Casares earned a Rotary Club scholarship while an exchange student from Washington, Pennsylvania. He then returned back to Buenos Aires to study business administration for three years at the University of San Andres and quit to establish the first Internet Service provider, Internet Argentina S.A. in 1994.
He left the firm and later founded the Argentine online brokerage Patagon in 1997. Patagon was established as the leading Latin American Internet financial services platform and expanded its banking online capabilities to United States, Spain, and Germany. Patagon was bought by Spanish banking institution, Banco Santander for $750 million, and later became Santander Online worldwide. The investors who invested in Patagon comprised George Soros, Intel, Microsoft, JP Morgan Chase and businessman Fred Wilson.
Casares was the founder and CEO of Lemon Wallet, a digital wallet platform. In 2013 the American firm LifeLock bought Lemon for about $43 million (US).
