Nyunggai Warren Stephen Mundine AO (born 11 August 1956 in Grafton, New South Wales) is an Australian Aboriginal leader and politician. Mundine served as an ALP National Presidency of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and resigned from the party in 2012. Mundine was named chairperson of the Coalition government’s Indigenous Advisory Council by then-prime minister Tony Abbott. Mundine ran unsuccessfully for Liberal’s seat that was marginalized Gilmore located on the southern coast in New South Wales in the 2019 Australian federal election.

At the 2001 election, Mundine was placed third on the ALP (NSW) senate ticket. He was unsuccessful in being elected to federal parliament. In 2004, Mundine again attempted to enter federal parliament but this time through the House of Representatives. He sought Labor Party preselection for the federal seat of Fowler but was not successful. The sitting Labor MP, Julia Irwin, retained preselection for the 2004 and 2007 federal elections. With an electoral redistribution before the 2007 federal election, Labor MP Laurie Ferguson switched to the federal seat of Werriwa after his electorate of Reid was abolished.

Mundine won the 2005 Bennelong Medal for service to the Aboriginal community. He succeeded Barry Jones as President of the ALP, beginning his term on 28 January 2006, and became the first indigenous Australian to serve as president of an Australian political party. Mundine served one term as national president, stepping down in 2007.

In 1983, Mundine was married to his second partner Lynette Riley. They got married in 1984. They had seven children together including two children from his first marriage as well as four of their own, and a foster child. They got married another time in 2003 because when they first got married they were not married in the traditional Catholic church but instead at St Andrew’s Congregational Church in Balmain. This was an issue that bothered Mundine and so, to mark 20 years of marriage, They renewed their vows in St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Dubbo. Mundine stated to The Catholic Weekly: “I pray to God every night, to thank him for what I have and talk about my issues and problems.”

His former directorship of the Australian Uranium Association has attracted criticism from anti-nuclear lobbies. Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011, the Sydney Morning Herald named Mundine as a supporter of nuclear power.
