Warren Cann is one of the most popular and richest Drummer who was born on May 20, 1950 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Warren Reginald Cann (born 20 May 1950 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) is a Canadian drummer and drum machine programmer popular as a part of the British new wave group Ultravox.

The spring of 1978 in the spring of 1978, when Ultravox came out with its Systems of Romance album, the drumming style of Cann shifted away from his rock roots and towards what was now what was becoming the New Wave sound. He tried to achieve very precise timing. This will make songs featuring live drums synchronize with songs controlled by electronic, computer-controlled drums. To illustrate this check out the song “Sleepwalk”, where Cann plays live drums, and “Mr. X”, in which the drums are sequenced. Both tracks are available on Vienna. Despite his machine-like speed, Cann would often do things that drum machines or electronic sequenced percussion were capable of in the past. Particularly, he would play extremely precise triplet fills as well as crescendos, particularly for the snare drum. Although these two methods are easy to achieve with electronic instruments, in 1979-1982, they were practically impossible. It could convince listeners that they were listening to a drum machine but then show them otherwise by outperforming the rather basic sequencing options at the day. From a technical point of view, Cann preferred a traditional grip. In his Quartet album and later touring (1982), Cann employed various different sets of Simmons SDS-V electronic percussion pads to the point that there was an additional kit made up of hexagonal Simmons pads that was played while in a standing position. This style of playing was unusual and Cann was using this arrangement for one song just one time, which was “The Song (We Go)” from Quartet.

He remained active outside the band during Ultravox success. In 1982 he played acoustic and electronic percussion for Zaine Griff (album “Figvres”) and Peter Godwin (single “Images of Heaven”). He and Hans Zimmer were a part of the backing band for a New Romantic singer Ronny on her London show in The Dominion. Ronny also participated in the Helden project, formed by Cann and Zimmer that year, which merged electronic, orchestral and classical influences. Helden were the first music project to play The London Planetarium in March 1983. They released a single “Holding on” (1983) and recorded an album called “Spies” which featured lots of guests (Zaine Griff, Eddie Maelov from Eddie & Sunshine, Brian Robertson from Thin Lizzy etc.). It remains unreleased.

In addition to his drum machine work, Cann designed several modifications for bass player Chris Cross’ Minimoog, among them a primitive sequencer (built by Roy Gwinn) made from a series of toggle switches to add syncopation to the synthesiser’s ability to create a stream of eighth notes, and a proprietary triggering system that allowed Cann and Cross to synchronise the Minimoog with Cann’s drum machines, a feat performed almost three years before MIDI was officially introduced in 1983. According to Midge Ure’s autobiography, when the Minimoog broke down on tour, Ultravox borrowed one from The Cars, but it didn’t help as it lacked the proprietary modifications.

Cann played on the very first albums that were released through Island Records, Ultravox! (1977), Ha! Ha! Ha! (both 1977) and Systems of Romance (1978). Following a tour through the United States and Canada the group broke up because of the departure of singer John Foxx and guitarist Robin Simon. Ultravox were replaced by guitarist and singer Midge Ure in the summer of 1979.

Drummers

Why did Ultravox split up?

That appeared to be the final nail in the band’s coffin, but Ultravox self- financed a US tour in early 1979. They split after their final gig near San Francisco in March 1979 and Foxx declared his intention to pursue a solo career. Simon remained in the US and briefly joined The Futants, a punk band from New York.

Why did Foxx leave Ultravox?

After the last show, near San Francisco, Foxx eventually quit. This was, he says, something he had planned to do from the beginning of the excursion, a decision and an announcement that made the tour “hellish” for all the sense that Ultravox were connecting with an audience.

How long was Midge Ure in Thin Lizzy?

Midge Ure was an unofficial member of Thin Lizzy between 1979 and 1980 , co-writing one track with Lynott before stepping in to help out the band following the sudden departure of Gary Moore during a U.S.A. tour.
