Wang was the first Chinese female astronaut, as she was a part of the Shenzhou 10 spaceship crew, that orbited the Earth during June of 2013 and also of the orbiting space station Tiangong-1 that docked with it. Wang was referred to as the “Goddess II”. She was the very first member of the crew to be announced in April, and the rest of the crew was revealed in June. Wang Yaping was one of two women who were in space on this anniversary, which marked the 50th year of Vostok 6 which was the first space mission by females, Valentina Tereshkova. The other woman who was in space on June 16, 2013 was Karen Nyberg, an American astronaut on board Tiangong-1, the International Space Station. On Tiangong-1, Wang carried out scientific experiments and gave an introductory physics class to Chinese students via live broadcast on television. Wang is now a title in the rank of Air Force Colonel who can fly four different aircraft models.
She was considered a candidate of the mission Shenzhou 9 in 2012. Then, Liu Yang was selected over her to take part in this historic task of the very initial Chinese female space traveler. Wang was part of the crew that backed SZ-9.

Colonel Wang Yaping (born January 27 in 1980) is a Chinese astronaut and military pilot. Wang became the only female astronaut named by the CNSA and was the second Chinese woman to be named a space explorer.
In September of 1991 she enrolled in the junior high schools in Yantai and, in 1994, she enrolled in Yantai Yizhong High School in Yantai, and was graduated from the high school in the year 1997. She was accepted into the Changchun Flight Academy of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force and was enlisted in August 1997. Wang Yaping is the seventh female military pilot in China. As a pilot for the Wuhan Air Force transport aircraft crew, she has been involved in a variety of major activities including military readiness exercises as well as exercises for combat, the Wenchuan Earthquake Relief, and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to eliminate clouds and decrease rain. After having safely flown for more than 1600 hours, she was designated an Air Force Class II pilot. In May 2010 , she became the first astronaut from China. At the time, Wang was an officer in China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force.
