Walter Maria de Silva (born 27 February 1951 in Lecco, Italy) is an Italian car designer who was the former director of Volkswagen Group Design, until 2015. He began his car design career in 1972 as a the trainee designer for Fiat’s Style Centre. De Silva has also worked as a designer for I.DE.A Institute, and as director of design for Alfa Romeo, SEAT and the Audi brand group. De Silva is currently the president of the women’s high-end footwear brand WALTERDESILVASHOES.
In the month of March 2002, Walter de Silva was appointed Director of Design for the now defunct Audi brand, which included three brands: Audi, SEAT and Lamborghini brands. Volkswagen Group management charged de Silva to give the Audi lineup a more emotional design style. This included an unpopular introduction of the high-height single-frame front grille, which now appears on the majority of Audi models. His first design that was fully developed for an actual manufacturing Audi model was in 2005 with the A6. He went into the Audi Q7, 2005 Audi Q7, 2006 Audi TT and the 2007 Audi A5, which is said to be his favorite design.
In 1999, Ferdinand Piech assigned Walter de Silva to work with SEAT, the Volkswagen Group SEAT division, in the hope of bringing enthusiasm and sportiness into SEAT design. It was the result that became SEAT the auto emocion idea, first displayed through the year 2000’s SEAT Salsa and the 2001 SEAT Tango concept cars, as a preview of SEAT the new style of design. The more expressive style has since been a major influence on the design and style of many automobiles, including those of 2002, such as SEAT Cordoba as well as the SEAT Ibiza and the SEAT Altea in 2004 and SEAT Altea and the 2005 SEAT Leon that were both highly acknowledged and then received numerous designs awards (e.g. the Red Dot design award, Autonis awardand “The World’s Most Beautiful Automobile 2004 Award in Milan etc. ).
