Bernard was a college football player during his time at the University of New Mexico, where he studied university studies , with a specialization on filmmaking. Bernard was a four-year letterman as well as a three-year player for the Lobos and played under the head coach Dennis Franchione (1997) and Rocky Long (1998-2000). Bernard completed his collegiate time with six interceptions. He was named for his All-Mountain West Team his junior and senior seasons. Bernard was one of the teammates of the future Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher.
Bernard was signed by his team the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in the year 2001. Then the Chargers released him in his 2001-2002 season. He was hired to the Indianapolis Colts late 2001, and later, he was sent to play with the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe. After his time with the Galaxy, Bernard went back to Indianapolis in 2002 under the new Coach Tony Dungy. The Colts transformed Bernard into a cornerback into an open safety. In 2002, Bernard was removed and was picked from the Seattle Seahawks. Bernard ended his playing career for the Seattle Seahawks and officially retired in 2005 because of injuries. Bernard was mainly a part of special teams, and was employed as a cornerback and security in the Seahawks.

Bernard’s oldest brother, Mike, was a standout high jumper for Southern Illinois University and was one of the first seven-foot jumpers in the state of Illinois. Bernard’s younger brother, Wayne, is a professional basketball player in Europe and was a standout basketball player at Davidson College. Wayne has signed NBA contracts with the Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors. Bernard’s youngest brother, Wynton, was a standout baseball player for Niagara University and was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2012 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. Wynton currently plays in the Chicago Cubs organization.
