Afanasieff was born Vladimir Nikitich Afanasiev (Russian: Vladimir Nikitich Afanas’ev ) in Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil to Russian parents Nikita and Tatiana. His father hails originally from Leningrad while his mom is from Harbin, Russia. from China. The couple met in Brazil in the 1950s. In the photo of his senior in the yearbook of his high school Afanasieff’s entry, he wrote that his aim is to “write and play better than Keith Emerson” of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Afanasieff was a major part of his career making music alongside Mariah Carey from 1990 until 1998. He was a part of several of the most popular Carey tracks, including “Hero”, which he wrote, co-produced, and in which he performed every single track of the album. “Hero” was released as the second single from her Music Box album. Music Box, and reached the top spot at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 25 in 1993. It continued to be on top of the charts during the span of four weeks. “Hero” has become one of her most popular songs and Carey often closes her performances by singing the track. Carey as well as Afanasieff also composed “One Sweet Day”, an duet with Carey with Boyz II Men. Walter Afanasieff (born February 10 1958) was formerly known as Baby Love in the 1980s is a musician record producer, songwriter and composer. He is an American of Brazilian descent.
