Wallace Darnell Johnson (born December 25 1956) was An American former professional player in baseball and a coach. He was a first-baseman for his team of Montreal Expos and San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox third base coach. He is also well-known for his skills as a pinch-hitter. Johnson was the switch hitter and was right-handed.
graduated at Indiana State University with a B.S degree in Accounting. The university named him to the CoSida Academic All-American team NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and received the McMillan Memorial Award for his leadership. was a co-captain in Indiana State University’s inaugural Missouri Valley Conference baseball championship and his first appearance in NCAA regional post-season competition. The nation’s top hitter (.502) throughout the season, and earned the title of MVC Conference Tournament MVP. He was named as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team and was elected to the Indiana State University Hall of Fame in 1985.
On May 2, 1988, Johnson broke up the perfect game bid of Ron Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds. Johnson getting a single with two outs and two strikes in the 9th inning.
On August 11, 1990 he was released by the Montreal Expos again and signed with the Oakland Athletics, but he did not appear in any games for the A’s. He played his final major league game on August 3, 1990. Johnson was a teammates of four Hall of Famers during his Expos tenure, that included Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines and Randy Johnson.
He played for a portion in 1983 playing for the Giants after being transferred to them on the 25th of May to acquire fielder Mike Vail. The following spring following spring, the Giants let him go and he was re-admitted for the Expos as an unrestricted free agent shortly after.

Wallace was selected to The Montreal Expos in the sixth round of the 1979 amateur draft. He was one of the very first Indiana ballplayers chosen. He started his professional career within the New York-Penn League that summer but by the time of the following season (1980) Wallace was leading his team in the Florida State League in batting (.334) and stole bases (58) He was awarded the MVP award in that season. Johnson made his debut in the major leagues with the Expos in the month of September, 1981. Then on the 3rd of October, Johnson delivered a pinch-hit triple (scoring two run) from Mets great relief pitcher Neil Allen that help propel the team to their first NL East title. Johnson was a highly regarded pinch-hitter. Johnson was also the Expos leading pinch-hit player of all time with the number 86.
Johnson led the major leagues in pinch-hits during the period 1986-1990. In February, 1990, Johnson won his arbitration case against the Expos and was the only winner of players that filed arbitration cases that year.
