Wade Daniel Townsend (born February 22nd 1983) is an American former professional baseball player who was twice selected as a 1st-round Major League Draft pick out of Rice University. Townsend was a student at Dripping Springs High School in Dripping Springs, Texas where the class of 2001 graduated. He was a player for coach Tom Hancock while at Dripping Springs. Following his junior year in high school, he was awarded an opportunity for baseball to Rice University. After his college years, Townsend was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the eighth selection of the 2004 Draft However, he was found ineligible to pursue negotiations with the Orioles as he remained at Rice to complete his studies. He was selected with Tampa Bay Devil Rays Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ with the eighth selection of the 2005’s Draft, and was signed for an $1.5 million reward.
In the fall of 2008 Townsend was sent back for the Arizona Fall League, where the team played just 10/3 innings, and surrendered 12 runs before being disabled with shoulder issues. Townsend was treated for surgery to repair the labrum that was torn and was in rehabilitation for the majority of the season of 2010. After a disappointing half-season with the leagues that are independent, Townsend retired in late 2010.
Townsend spent his first season as a reliever for Rice, which went to the College World Series and finished second in the nation in ERA. Townsend was 2–1 with a 2.28 ERA and six saves as a freshman, recording 51 strikeouts, 22 walks, and 10 wild pitches in 51.1 innings. As a sophomore in 2003, he struggled with his control in his first appearance but came into his own as a weekday starter, pitching Rice’s non-conference games against rival Houston and Big 12 opponents. He finished the season 11–2 with a 2.20 ERA, beating defending national champion Texas twice, including once in the CWS, Houston three times, and single wins over Nebraska, Baylor, and Texas A&M. The consensus all-American also recorded five saves as a reliever, mostly in Western Athletic Conference games, and led the WAC with a school-record 164 strikeouts (broken by Eddie Degerman in 2006).
Townsend, Philip Humber, and Jeff Niemann were all selected from the first eight picks in the 2004 draft. This was the first time that three teammates were selected so quickly in the exact same draft. Townsend as well as the Orioles however, refused to sign a contract. Townsend hired an agent which meant he renounced his eligibility for collegiate play and was enrolled at Rice to complete his studies in the seventh semester. Major League Baseball, however decided that Townsend’s return was a violation of the Orioles the right to discuss an agreement. Townsend returned to the draft in 2005, and was placed eighth overall and however, this time with the Devil Rays.
