Malakhov reached the semifinal stage of the Chess World Cup 2009 and was eliminated by the eventual runner-up Ruslan Ponomariov, after sequentially defeating Bassem Amin, Ilia Smirin, Pavel Eljanov, Wesley So and Peter Svidler.
