He was a trainer for his USSR National Biathlon Team between 1984 and 1992, preparing the six Olympic Champions in biathlon and becoming the Honorary Coach of the USSR in 1988.
Barnashov graduated from the Omsk State Institute for Physical Culture in 1980 . He is currently the head coach for the Russian Biathlon Team.

He was a member of Dynamo sport society, and was a part of the USSR Biathlon National Team in 1977. In the 1988 Olympics at Lake Placid he won a gold medal for team Soviet relay squad. He also won a bronze medal of the USSR 4 x 7.5 km relay team during the 1981, 1979 as well as 1982 Biathlon World Championships. For the total World Cup he came third overall during the 1978-79 season, behind Klaus Siebert and Frank Ullrich.
Barnashov was given his Order of the Badge of Honour in the year 1980, and in 1988, he received the Medal “For Labour Valour”. Between 1992 until 1998, Barnashov served as the coach in charge of Croatian National Cross-Country Skiing Team. Croatian National Cross-Country Skiing Team.
He was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 2nd class (October 21, 2010), for the successful preparation of the athletes who achieved high sport achievements at the XXI Olympic Winter Games of 2010 in Vancouver, Canada.
