Vladimir Akopian (Russian: Vladimir Akopian , Armenian: Vladimir Hakobyan born on 7 December 1971, in Baku, Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union) is an Armenian Grandmaster of chess.

The Armenia national chess team made its Chess Olympiad debut at the 30th Chess Olympiad in 1992 and won bronze. Akopian played on board two for the Olympiad, behind Rafael Vaganian.

He won the Armenian Chess Championship in 1996 and 1997. In 1999 he made his way through to the final of the FIDE knockout World Chess Championship, but lost to Alexander Khalifman by 3.5-2.5. In the 2004 event, he was knocked out in the quarter-finals by the player he had defeated in the 1999 semi-finals, Michael Adams.

Armenia and Akopian returned to their Olympiad title during this year’s 40th Chess Olympiad. It marked the 3rd time Armenia has won gold in the Olympiad. Akopian was playing on board two in the previous two events and board three in the most recent. When the athletes were presented with their gold medals and trophies, the Armenian national song Mer Hayrenik were played. Afterwards, The Armenian flag was hoisted in Istanbul. Levon Aronian was holding an Armenian flag while the team and he were sitting on the top podium. After returning to Yerevan the players were received with a welcome by a large number of people in Yerevan as soon as their plane landed at Zvartnots Airport.
