The year was 1989 and he left along with wife, and his son who was only barely a month old, to travel around the globe. In the Caribbean the next day, he was lucky enough to hear announcing for the Vendee Globe, a round-the-world single-handed regatta, with no stops, and with no assistance. Vittorio changed his bow and returned home. He selling the boat, and using the funds he was able to save In 1991, he conceived and started construction of his first boat, the Moana 60, the first 60′ Italian Open. With the full assistance of his family and acquaintances, and due to the financial backing of his father and financial backing, he completed the boat in his boatyard of his family.
In 1995, he set a monohull sailing record at the Roma x2 regatta, again with the Moana 60.
In 1996, he had the third time in his class at the Europe 1 Star. Vittorio had a budget of 60 million lire compared to the 2.5 billion lire of his rivals, but he was heading up the fleet until just a few miles from the finish.
He registered to race in the Ostar which was the only-hand Trans-Atlantic race. It was the start of his goals. He was able to qualify and headed to England along with his friend Luca and Anna whom that he had only had a meeting with. In the course of an extreme storm, the vessel crashed in the Spanish coast, just outside of in the Strait of Gibraltar. The boat was stranded in a rock cliffs, but it was still intact. After a turbulent trip through the slopes of the hill, he was able to get his boat fixed but not in time to make it to Plymouth to begin the race.

Vittorio has been sailing in through the Mediterranean for the past five years. He was just 5 years old. He was on the famous CS&RB which is the vessel Doi and Franco participated in the inaugural 1973 race of Whitbread the world’s largest race with a team. When he was still a child He was a part of their final preparations , and then watched them sail off with a sense of being simultaneously elated and disappointed that they had to stay on the land. In 1992, Vittorio set off on the Europe 1 Star (formerly the Ostar). Immediately afterwards, he was the first Italian to participate in the Vendée- Globe, “The Everest of the Seas.” Unfortunately, he was forced to a halt when his rudder broke 1,700 miles from Cape Horn, just as he was getting ready to take 4th place. After attempting several times to advance toward Cape Horn and finish the race, he decided to withdraw and head for Tahiti, navigating a 2,600 mile against the wind in the South Pacific, without a rudder.
