Viola Amherd (born 7 June 1962 located in the Brig-Glis region) is a Swiss politician who has been a part of the Federal Council of Switzerland since January of 2019. Her position is head of Switzerland’s Department of Defence, and is the first woman to hold in this position.

In the midst of speculations over a potential candidate to her seat on the Swiss Federal Council, she announced her candidacy to be the replacing of Doris Leuthard on 5 October 2018. On the 16th of November Amherd along with Heidi Z’graggen was formally nominated as Federal Council candidates by the CVP. On the 5th of December, 2018, Heidi was elected the Federal Council with 148 voting on the first ballot along with Karin Keller-Sutter (FDP).

On the 10th of December, 2018 On 10 December 2018, the Federal Council announced that Amherd was to lead the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) beginning the 1st of January, 2019. Amherd is thus only the second woman ever to lead this department.
