Just a few days before Nomination Day on April 27, 2011 the PAP team from the Dutch-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) headed by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, told the media it was they believed that the SDP were “suppressing” a video which could “raise some awkward questions” about the agenda of the party. Dr Wijeysingha’s answer was that he wasn’t sure of which video Dr Balakrishnan was alluded to, and also that his position was that the SDP is “an open party”.

The Dr. Vincent Wijeysingha (born 2 May 1970) is an academic, activist for civil rights as well as a politician in Singapore. He was a part of Singapore’s party of opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) from 2010 to 2013. He was the Treasurer of the party, and he also ran as a candidate for parliamentary office in the general election of the party in 2011. It was the first time in Singapore that a politician is politician who was openly gay.

The video issue was resolved on April 25, 2011, just two days before Nomination Day and both PAP along with the SDP making statements on the issue. The New Paper, ran an article on the cover of 26 April 2011 one day before Nomination Day, under the headline “Is Singapore ready to welcome gay-friendly lawmakers Is Singapore ready for a gay MP? (in reference to Dr. Wijeysingha and the comments he said on the video which was filmed in a panel discussion on the rights of gay people within Singapore).

In August 2013, Wijeysingha announced that he was resigning from the SDP, stating that he wished to focus his efforts on pursuing his work in civil society.
