Early Years
Viktor Prokopenya was born in Minsk, Belarus, on July 21, 1983. He grew up in a family of scientific intellectuals. His father was a physicist and mathematician, working as a professor at the Belarusian State University and later at the Belarusian National Technical University. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he went into business. Viktor’s mother worked as a mathematician.
In 1999, when Viktor was only 16 years old, his father died in a car accident. He stayed with his mother, who worked as an auditor then, and took over the family’s care.
Education
Prokopenya studied at Minsk gymnasiums No. 2 and No. 130. After graduating in 2000, Prokopenya entered the European Humanities University, where he graduated in 2004 with honours in Information Technologies.
Two years later, he received a diploma from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, specialising in Software Development and Applied Mathematics.
From 2008 to 2010, Viktor studied at the Leon Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management (LKAEM) in Warsaw, Poland.
2010, he received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Belarusian State University in Minsk. In the same year, he completed a Master’s in Business Administration at the IPM Business School in Minsk.
Viktor continued his studies at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, where he earned a Master’s degree in Internet Marketing in 2012. In 2017, he defended his doctoral thesis in Business Administration at SBS Swiss Business School.
Beginning of Career and Entrepreneurial Activity
In the early 2000s, Viktor Prokopenya created his first IT company, which developed mobile applications such as All-in Fitness (in 2010), Smart Alarm Clock and Yoga.com for iPhone and iPad. In 2011, it was ranked among the “best software companies” in Eastern Europe.
Prokopenya was the company’s CEO until 2011, when the company was sold for 95 million euros to Teddy Sagi, an Israeli businessman and founder of Playtech Software. It was the largest deal in the history of the Belarusian technology industry.
VP Capital
In 2012, Viktor Prokopenya created the investment company VP Capital, focusing on the technology sector. Among the first investments was Capital.com, which develops solutions for algorithmic quoting of financial instruments. The company was a Belarusian High Technology Park resident and was honoured as the best employer of the year. British IG Holdings bought out VP Capital’s mobile applications division in 2014.
Today, the VP Capital is focused on global investment in innovative high- technology projects, such as artificial intelligence and fintech.

Personal life
Prokopenya is a family man with a wife, Nadia Prokopenya, and three sons. They have British citizenship and currently reside in London.

Social Activities
Prokopenya participated in developing the legislative framework aimed at stimulating IT development in Belarus. This work was formalized in the Decree “On the Development of the Digital Economy”, signed on December 22, 2017.
After the scandalous 2020 presidential election, Prokopenya condemned the authorities’ violence. He also allocated $100k to rehabilitate people injured during the dispersal of street rallies and called on the business community to join the initiatives.
In 2022, Prokopenya strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His cryptocurrency exchange banned the registration of new users from Russia and became the first major cryptocurrency exchange to suspend all transactions for its residents.
In early March 2022, he donated $1 million to help Ukraine. The funds were distributed among three charitable organizations: GlobalGiving, the Red Cross of Ukraine, and the Humanitarian Aid Fund under the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. In the same month, Prokopenya signed an international petition from venture capitalists and startups against the bloodshed in Ukraine.
In February 2023, he participated in the Munich Security Conference.
In 2023, Victor Prokopenya was appointed as Visiting Professor of Practice in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Leeds and Leeds University Business School.
Relations with the Media
Viktar Prakapenia has repeatedly spoken out in defence of the media and against state pressure on the media.
In January 2018, he publicly opposed blocking the websites “Charter’97” and “Belarusian Partisan”.
In August 2018, through the media, he called on law enforcers to release detained journalists and editors of TUT.BY, BelaPAN and other Belarusian media, saying that with this detention, “the country is taking a huge step backwards.”
In 2017-2021, Prokopenya invested $500 thousand in Dev.by and Dev.media to support the independent media.
