Victoria Kolakowski (born August 29 1961, in Queens, New York) is a prominent American lawyer and, since January of 2011 as a judge in the Alameda County Superior Court. Kolakowski was the very first transgender person who is openly gay to be the judge for a trial court of broad jurisdiction within the United States, the first chosen to be a judge, and the first person to be a judge anywhere in California. (Houston Municipal Court Judge Phyllis Frye was the first judge to be openly transgender of any sort to be appointed in the United States).

She was co-chairperson of the Bay Area Transgender Law Association between 1996 and 2000. She is a member of the National Association of Women Judges since 2006.

Kolakowski married Cynthia Laird, news editor of the Bay Area Reporter, on June 16, 2008. Ron Dellums performed the ceremony.

Before she was elected with 51% of the vote to her opponent’s 48% on November 2, 2010, Kolakowski served as an administrative law judge with the California Public Utilities Commission for four years.

Kolakowski was a graduate of The Paul M. Hebert Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with the title of Juris Doctor in 1989. She started her transition in her final semester in law school. Kolakowski was undergoing an operation to re-assign sex in the year 1992 (this was previously reported to be 1991). Kolakowski had to file a lawsuit to pass the bar examination in Louisiana after revealing that she was transgender.
