Victor Rice is one of the most popular and richest Record Producer who was born on April 17, 1967 in Oyster Bay, New York, United States. Victor Rice is an influential musician, producer , and mix engineer hailing from New York City. Raised in Huntington, New York. He studied at in the Manhattan School of Music and started the professional path in late 1980s, during the”third wave” as producer and bassist. In the mid-90s, Rice became a composer as well as a sound designer for TV. After 2002 Rice relocated to Brazil and, despite working as a performer, producer as well as sound engineer, he decided to shift his focus to becoming famous in the field of mix engineering working with various local bands from a range of styles.

When he was in Brazil, Rice continued to perform as a producer and, in particular, a mix engineer. He started his career working with Estudio El Rocha (2002-2010) and later with Estudio El Rocha (2002-2010) where the engineer was an engineer of mix (on both digital and analog system) for a variety of artists. From 2002 to 2014 Rice also worked for Radiola Records, a record label with its headquarters in Sao Paulo, where he created productions for the label and booked ska artists coming across to Brazil in North America.

After moving to São Paulo, Brazil in 2002, Rice continued to produce reggae and ska music by a variety of international acts, including Firebug (Brazil), The Moon Invaders (Belgium), The Stingers ATX (USA), The Japonicans (Japan) and Chris Murray (Canada), Pitshú (a.k.a. Alberto Matondo Manzambi)/Cedric Brooks (Brazil&Angola/Jamaica) and Buford O’Sullivan (USA). In addition, from 2000-2009 Rice was a bassist and engineer with Easy Star Records and worked on many of their recordings, including Dub Side of the Moon, Radiodread, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band and Ticklah vs. Axelrod. He also released his second solo album “In America” in 2003, an album of dub music so named because it was recorded in New York and finished in São Paulo.

In 2008, Rice began building his own studio, Studio Copan. It was completed in 2010 and is located in and named after the famous Edifício Copan building in São Paulo.

In the decade of 2000, Rice continued to play bass and record for musicians such as Vic Ruggiero, Rocker T and Crazy Baldhead. Also, he performed in his group, the Victor Rice Octet, a group that plays his own reggae and ska compositions. They also perform as the Strikkly Vkkly Dubsystem an act that is a solo one that Rice mixes live dub on stage with an analog reel-to-reel tape machine as well as traditional digital signal processing. While influenced by significant musicians of the foundation, such as King Tubby and Augustus Pablo, Rice has a dub style that differs from the style of the early pioneers of this genre. Although he utilizes several of the echo, delay and reverb effects early dub mixers employed but he mostly uses ska beats that are more fast-paced as opposed to the traditional reggae roots rhythms of Jamaican dub.

Rice started playing ska music around 1988 as a bassist in The Scofflaws, one of the most prominent ska groups in the third wave. In the mid- and early 1990s Rice became a prominent player in the New York ska scene performing both in the form of a band (Scofflaws, Stubborn All-Stars, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble) and as a producer (The Pietasters The Slackers, The Adjusters, Skavoovie and the Epitones and many others) and gained acclaim because of his involvement with numerous bands that were on the renowned Moon Ska record label. The year 1996 was when Rice started to experiment with the dub genre. The majority of it was recorded within Version City, the recording studio Jeff “King Django” Baker created in the borough of East Third Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side for his label, Stubborn Records. The music approach in Version City was completely analog and unique, as recordings were generally communitarian and collaborative. This gave Rice to develop and explore his dub techniques in the company of the huge “Version City Rockers” stable of musicians, as well as producer/musicians including “Agent” Jay Nugent. Rice’s first solo album, At Version City, was completely recorded in the Version City studio and released in 1999.

In 1999, Rice began working in the television industry beginning with an apprenticeship at Cliff Schwarz Music an agency for post-production that was based on the outskirts of New York City. In the agency, he composed mixed and composed audio design for shows that were broadcast through The Sci-Fi Channel and the USA Network. He stayed at Cliff Schwarz Music through 2004 when Rice was promoted to mixer and audio engineer at Ultrabland which is a digital production agency that provides editing design, music and design services to TV brands. In his time at Ultrabland that lasted from 2004 to 2008 the company was a mix-and-post post-production on numerous advertising campaigns for brands like HBO (including their channel designs), Showtime, the SyFy Channel and The USA Network and Nickelodeon.

After moving to São Paulo in 2002, Rice continued to perform, largely with the ska and reggae group Firebug BR, for whom he played bass, composed, produced. Composed of notable artists from both the United States and Brazil, Firebug BR was signed to São Paulo-based Radiola Records, toured internationally and was considered an important group that improved the ska music scene in São Paulo. Since 2004 he has also worked closely with Dubversão Sistema de Som, one of São Paulo’s first roots reggae sound systems.
