Callejas was not fighting again over the next two years. A variety of reasons were offered to explain this, including management and weight-making problems. However, when he returned to fight in 1987 won two fights against the top opponents Cleo Garcia (by decision in 10) and Nivio Nolasco (knockout in one) The latter fight which was Callejas’ Las Vegas debut. Callejas was granted a chance to fight for the WBC to defend his championship in 1998 which is why he traveled to Australia and fought Jeff Fenech on March 7 in a knockout loss in ten rounds for the vacant title of the world’s Featherweight title.
In the month of May, Stecca went to Puerto Rico to defend his title against Callejas. The 26th of May, Callejas won the title of world champion by beating Stecca out in the eighth round. Callejas started to confront various challenges to fight and it was one year later when Callejas was able to be able to defend the title for the first time after he defeated future IBF Super Bantamweight Champion Seung Hoon Lee in a decision on 15 on February 2nd 1985, after he had beaten Seung-Hoon Lee in the eighth round in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.

Callejas recorded his record to include 36 wins and four defeats in his amateur boxing career In 1979, he made the decision to go professional. This was the 18th of February of the same year. In his debut fight, Callejas, like Henry Armstrong, Alexis Arguello, Chucho Castillo, and Wilfredo Vazquez, fell. He was defeated by Jose Parrilla by a decision in just four rounds. In his subsequent three bouts He travelled to various different Caribbean islands, and regaining his revenge against Parrilla on St. Croix for his first professional victory. He knocked out Wilt Jones in just one bout in St. Marteen for his first knockout. He also beat Albert Pagan, also by knockout, over five rounds.
Between the fight with Jones and the one against Jose Ortiz in 1983, Callejas was able to record 15 knockout victories in a row, claiming the Puerto Rican Jr. Featherweight title as well as being ranked among the most prestigious Jr. Featherweights, with the WBA in the process. Some fans even began to refer to him as”the new” Wilfredo Gomez. The fight he had with Ortiz was ended with an uncontest in the second round. Then on May 7 1983, he defeated Juan Arenade Balzan by a knockout in just three rounds. And the following day on February 15 of 1984, he defeated WBA’s most formidable competitor, Bernardo Checa, by knockout after three rounds in Guaynabo. The same night, it was in Milan, Italian boxer Loris Stecca was crowned an all-new Jr. Featherweight champion of the world after he defeated Leo Cruz by a knockout in round 12 to win victory over the WBA title.
