Viola Alexander Lyles (born September 28th 1952) is an American politician currently serving as the 59th Mayor in Charlotte, North Carolina, since the year 2017. As a Member of the Democratic Party, Lyles was an elected council member on the Charlotte City Council before taking the office of mayor.

Lyles was a candidate for the office of mayor in Charlotte in the 2017 municipal election. She beat Jennifer Roberts, the incumbent mayor in the Democratic Party primary election in September of 2017 and also defeated Kenny Smith, a Republican city council member in the general election. She was the first female mayor of African descent of the city. She was it is also the first former city administrator who was elected the mayor.

Lyles has been elected to her seat on the Charlotte City Council in 2013 she was also elected to the position of mayor pro-tem in 2015. After the murder at the hands of Keith Lamont Scott in September 2016 She suggested a seven-point strategy to decrease racial and social divides in Charlotte, portions of which were endorsed by the council.
