Vernon Rodney Coaker (born 17 June 1953) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gedling between 1997 and the year 2019. He also held the position of Secretary of State for Police, Crime and Security from 2008 to 2009, later Minister of State to Schools from 2009 until 2010. He was also the shadow Secretary of State to Defence from 2013 until 2015, and Shadow Secretary State of Northern Ireland from October 2011 until October 2013, and in September 2015, until his departure in June 2016 of his position in the Shadow Cabinet.

Soon after being appointed Minister of Drugs and Crime Reduction in the reshuffle of May 2006, He told Coventry Evening Telegraph that he had admitted to Coventry Evening Telegraph that he had taken “one or two puffs” of cannabis during his time as when a student, but didn’t take pleasure in the experience. The admission was made as part of an all-over tour of the country to assess the effectiveness of the drug strategy. He also supports those who take shots as well as fishing.

After a number of Parliamentary Private Secretary roles, Coaker became a government whip in May 2005 having been an assistant whip since June 2003. He served as a Minister of State at the Home Office between 2008 and 2009 before being moved to take up the role of Minister of State for Schools and Learning between 2009 and 2010. Following the Labour defeat at the 2010 General Election, Coaker was appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in October 2011. Coaker joined dozens of shadow ministers in resigning from his position on 26 June 2016 in Labour’s parliamentary disquiet over the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn. He supported Owen Smith in the failed attempt to replace Jeremy Corbyn in the 2016 Labour Party (UK) leadership election.

Coaker was district councillor for his district, the Cotgrave Ward in Rushcliffe, Nottinghamshire from 1983 until 1997. He also served as the chairman in the Labour group in the council between 1987 until 1997. He was a candidate for his Rushcliffe seats in the year 1983. He was a candidate for Gedling in 1992 and 1987 before losing to Andrew Mitchell in the 1997 election making him one of the very first Labour MP to be elected to the Gedling seat.

Coaker taught at the school before becoming a history teacher in Manvers Pierrepont School (now the Carlton Road Centre of Castle College Nottingham) from 1976 until 1982. The remaining eight injuries included “wasp sting”, an injury while “sitting in a car”, and an officer succumbing “to sun and heat”. There were 68 injuries in total with the rest being treated by first-aiders at the scene. The whole operation had involved more than 1,000 officers.
