In 2017 he was approached by an opportunity to sign the Kannada film Kempegowda-2 which was a spin-off from Kempe Gowda, the Kannada remake of Singam. The film was released to favorable reception and Varun was later signed on to sign more films in Kannada and Tamil, including Kongka Pass with the same team.
In the year 2017, Varun Unni composed the music for the movie Second Rain (Peyyum Mazhaye) which was directed and produced by Lijo Augustin. Cinematography was done created by A. Kumaran of Thanga Magan fame.
