Troy Powell is one of the most popular and richest Dancer who was born on January 27, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. Troy Powell (born January 27 1969 Brooklyn) is also known in the guise of Troy O’Neil Powell is an American choreographer, dancer and educator as well as director. He was the former principal dancer in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and is the current director of AAADT’s second organization, Ailey 2.

In 2001, after having performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for ten year, Powell left the company to join The Ailey School as a master Horton technique instructor and to become the choreographer of residence in Ailey 2. He choreographed his ballets with Ailey 2 have included The Tyner Project, Fragments, First Circles, Point of Departure, How Small a Thought external Knot, Hope (How They Rise), Reference Point, and Ebb and Flow. In 2003, he was made director associate for Ailey 2. After the departure of Sylvia Waters in 2012 he was named artistic director for Ailey 2. This made the second person to run the company over its 38-year history. As of 2015 Powell was the director of Ailey 2 as the first individual season, which was held at The Joyce Theater. As part of the 2019 Ailey Spirit Gala—which commemorated the 50th anniversary of The Ailey School—Powell choreographed a biographical ballet that followed his journey through the Ailey institution, from entering the school to joining the first company. He used students from The Ailey School along with members of Ailey II and the main company to choreograph the piece which he titled, Testimony. AAADT leading dancer Solomon Dumas danced as the adult version of Powell. Powell stated that Dumas’ status as the first graduate of AileyCamp to join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a company member, made their stories mirror images of each other. Powell dedicated Testimony to Alvin Ailey, crediting him as “a lifesaver” who “gave me these two feet that I’m standing on.”

After showing his work to Passages during the 1997 Ailey Gala, Powell was given the task of creating an entire ballet for the principal company. The work, Ascension, debuted in 1998, and it was named to Powell for his late mother’s memory. When interviewed by the NYTimes, Powell praised Judith Jamison for carrying on the tradition of giving opportunities for people of color to choreograph and show off their talent. Alongside his work with Ailey, Powell also danced with Complexions Contemporary Ballet, which was started by his Ailey coworkers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson and was a Principal Guest Artist for Batsheva Dance Company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Fred Benjamin Dance Company.

The family was raised and bred within Brooklyn, Powell met Alvin Ailey at age nine, when Ailey visited his school to instruct an advanced class. It was unknown by Powell then it was an audition to be considered for a scholarship that would allow him to join the first program for children that was held at The Ailey School. Even though he didn’t have formal dance instruction, Powell was handpicked by Ailey to be a part of the program. While studying at the school Ailey was a mentor and father figure for Powell. In 1987, he graduated from LaGuardia High School of The Performing Arts with a focus on dance. The following year , he was asked to join Sylvia Waters to join Ailey 2 that was later named The AIvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble.

Powell was asked by his company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1991 by Judith Jamison, who had been appointed artistic director for the organization following Ailey’s demise in 1989. While working as a member of AAADT, AAADT, Powell toured across the world, playing major characters in his work by Ailey, including Blue’s Suite, For ‘Bird’-With Love, Masekela Language, The River, Night Creature, Phases, and the Sinner Man trio in Revelations and Ulysses Dove’s Episodes and Hans Van Manen’s Polish Pieces, George Faison’s Suite Otis, Talley Beatty’s Stack-Up and Earl Mosely’s Days Past, Not Forgotten Billy Wilson’s The Winter in Lisbon, Donald Byrd’s Dance at The Gym, and in Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s female performance in the musical Shelter.

Powell appeared on season 14 of America’s Next Top Model the episode Let’s Dance as a guest coach and choreographer, teaching the models how to pose in different styles of dance. He was featured on the Polish edition of So You Think You Can Dance as a guest choreographer in 2012, teaching the contestants choreography from his ballet External Knot.
