Rawat was born on the 20th of December, 1960 at the village Khairasain within the Kotdwar Tehsil of the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. He was the 9th and youngest child of the family. He received an MA in journalism at Birla Campus located in Srinagar which is affiliated with the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.

Rawat was defeated in a by-election of Doiwala the year 2014 after the seat was taken by the then chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal. In 2017, he won the same Assembly seat of Doiwala.

In July 2019, Rawat said that cow is the only animal that exhales oxygen and that living in close proximity to cows could cure tuberculosis. This was criticised by rivals.

Rawat was an active participant in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from 1979 until 2002. He held the position of the coordinator secretary for the Uttarakhand region, then the Uttarakhand state, following the state’s creation in 2000. Rawat was elected to the state from Doiwala in the state’s inaugural legislative elections in 2002. He was elected to the State legislature in the 2007 elections, and also served as the State’s Minister for Agriculture. As an official of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he was Jharkhand’s in-charge as well as Uttarakhand group’s leader. After winning against Doiwala and again, in 2017 he was appointed the Chief Minister when his party gained a majority and formed the government.

Trivendra Singh Rawat (born 20 December 1960) is an Indian politician. He is the eighth chief minister of Uttarakhand.

Rawat joined the right-wing organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1979 before becoming its Pracharak (apostle) in the Dehradun region in the year 1985. In the following year, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is the political party that is associated with it. He was appointed the BJP’s organizing director for its Uttarakhand region and worked closely with the party’s senior Leader Lalji Tandon at the time. He also was active in the Uttarakhand campaign, and during this time many times he was detained. Following the region’s statehood at the end of 2000 Rawat became the state’s chief of the state BJP president.

His 27 July 2017 tweet about linguistic preferences sparked off a controversy and he was accused of preferring Garhwali language over the Kumaoni language.
