After having graduated from law school Coffin was an assistant to the Judge Albert Wheeler Coffrin in the District of Vermont. From 1991 to 1994 Coffin served as counsel for senator Patrick Leahy on the Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Technology and the Law. Before that, he worked for the duration of two years as a litigator with Hale and Dorr in Boston. From 1994 to 2006 he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Vermont, serving in the Civil Division for four years and in the Criminal Division for eight years. From 2006 until 2009, he was counsel for Paul Frank & Collins, the law firm that is located in Burlington, Vermont.
