He was a former NCAA Champion, a two-time World Outdoor Champion, a participant on the United States 2008 Olympic team and the silver medalist from the decathlon in the London 2012 Olympics. In 2018, he is Inducted in the Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame in the year 2018.
In 2009, at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Hardee won gold in the decathlon by scoring a points totaling 8790. This is his personal best. He was given the Jim Thorpe All-Around Award by the United States Sports Academy for his efforts the year before. In the same year he took home the USA Outdoor championship with a score of 8,261. In the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Hardee took home a silver medal in the heptathlon, finishing ahead of Bryan Clay. Hardee had a point total of 6184. This was 20 points lower than Clay. In the 2010 World Championships in Athletics, Hardee beat his fellow countryman Ashton Eaton and retained the world title in the decathlon, with a final score of 807.
Hardee was runner-up the decathlon in the 2009 US Olympic Trials and made his first Olympic team. In the Olympics the following year, he finished in fourth place in seven events, but his insufficient mark in the pole vault cost him the chance to compete. His performance during the outdoor competitions of 2008 attracted attention by his team, the New York Jets of the National Football League, who provided him with a trial. He did not show any desire to take the chance.

Hardee was not born as decathlete. He was a basketball player, and only was a part of the field and track team in junior after not making the basketball varsity team for Vestavia Hills High School. He was enlisted to Mississippi State University as a pole vaulter. Hardee began college in Mississippi State in 2002. It was during his time at the university that the coaches, noticing his size and speed, forced him towards the decathlon and the indoor Heptathlon. He placed 2nd in decathlon during the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Mississippi State dropped its indoor track and field team after the 2004 season, and Hardee was transferred into Texas State University. University of Texas. In his first year at Texas He finished second in the Heptathlon event at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships and won the decathlon in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He broke the NCAA record for the decathlon with the personal record of 8,465 points. He also won the NCAA Division I Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. In 2012, Hardee again finished second in the Olympic Trials and made a second Olympic Team. On August 9, 2012, he won the silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics behind Eaton. Hardee attempted to make a third Olympic team in 2016, but was unsuccessful due to injury. He did attend the Olympics as a television analyst for NBC Sports.
