Matsunashi has stated that her movies “are based on my own previous experiences with my ex-boyfriends” and The Way of the Director is about the two protagonists Saito and Kitagawa, who both are aspiring to be directors. Saito has a name for her work in independent films, but Kitagawa is influenced by a close friend to become director for porn even but he is still dreaming of becoming a legitimate director. After meeting Saito again after 10 years, Kitagawa is enticed by the idea of making an excursion to northern Hokkaido in the winter months along with Saito. If things go wrong, and Saito is killed, Kitagawa eats her flesh to stay alive, but then succumbs to the same. A friend helps save his film footage, and Kitagawa is finally a mainstream director.

Matsunashi continued to direct and one of her earlier film, Bitch Matilda (1998) received her a nomination to the New Director’s Award from the Directors Guild of Japan. Her subsequent film, SABU, Goodbye to their Youth in 2000 was a mix with science-fiction and political satire and was the first attempt of Matsunashi to create a humorous depiction of young men from the perspective of a woman. The film was screened at the theaters throughout Osaka and Tokyo and also at the TromaDance Film Festival in 2002. The next film by Matsunashi (from the year 2002) is Replicant Joe, with another science fiction-fantasy plot where the main character is a robotic equipped with a rocket launcher arm and an incredibly small penis of wool.

The comedy, released theatrically in Japan in November 2008, concerns an office lady whose humdrum life is changed when she attempts to win a national darts competition.
