His father died on 19 January 2015 after a long illness, and his funeral service was held at the Scots College Chapel in Sydney.

Tate has been elected as mayor of Broadwater in the year 2012, as an independent after the mayor, Ron Clarke, resigned in February of 2012, after declaring his nomination to run as an independent for Broadwater during the Queensland elections for the state of Queensland. Tate previously had two unsuccessful attempts to run for mayor before his success, which included as an endorser for a Liberal candidate in 2008.
