Milton’s first official PBA event in his official capacity as a PBA card holder is that of the AMF Magicscore Open held in Kissimmee, Florida, in February 1978. He won the first title of his national career in the month of January 1983, at the Showboat Invitational. Through the 1980s, Tom was an opponent to be reckoned by the racetrack as evident by his five national championships and 16 top 5 finishes prior to injuries forced him to withdraw following the end to the season of 1988. The 1988 season turned out to be a very emotional one because it was Milton’s first return to the PBA circuit after a period of time to heal from a persistent injury. It culminated in him winning his fifth and final National title in the Miller Lite Classic tournament held in Miami in February of 1988. What made it an emotional and memorable occasion was the fact that Tom’s mother, Tam, was able to be present at the first PBA tournament and cheered Milton on to the victory. However, the wife of Tom, Darlene has to remain her home at home in St. Petersburg as she was in charge of the local bowling event in honor of George Litts, Milton’s longtime patron who passed away in the year 1986. George was one of Tom’s most faithful supporters since the beginning, and was not just a sponsor for Tom for a period of time and also was an instructor and father figure, in addition to his sponsorship of the tour. As such this year’s Litts Memorial Tournament held special significance to Tom because in the previous season, when Tom took home the Miller Lite Open, upon Darlene accompanying him on the lane before his post-victory interview, she informed Tom the wife of George had informed Darlene that George’s view was that Tom did not have to share his prize with his sponsor. This made it even more delicious as this was the biggest winnings purse of his career with $39,000. This was the reason, even though Tom’s PBA career ended abruptly but the time from the Lite Beer Champion in Milwaukee and the final victory on tour in the Miller Lite Classic Miami Open in 1988 marked the peak for his entire career.
Alongside his bowling achievements in the local area prior to joining to the PBA, Milton went on to achieve the highest conference average for bowling while being a part of the Hillsborough Community College bowling team. He was a part of the team in 1979. collaborated together with Pete Brown, also of St. Petersburg, to win second place at the ABC National Classic Championships held in Tampa but they were defeated in the final by the pro Burton brothers (Nelson “Bo” Jr. and Neil). Tom’s initial thoughts of the profession of professional bowling was the result of his winnings as an amateur in a number of PBA south regional events.
Milton was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, to parents Sam (d. 2009) and Tam (d. 2008) Milton, and has two older twin sisters, Tam and Terry. Tom graduated from Lakewood High School and participated in organized baseball and basketball leagues. He initially took an interest in bowling at age 11, joining a Saturday morning Young America Bowling Alliance (YABA) junior league at Skyway Lanes upon being encouraged by Arlene Levine, the desk manager, who was also a certified coach/instructor. Milton continued to develop and hone his bowling skills under Levine’s tutelage, garnering many YABA awards throughout his junior career, after which he joined the American Bowling Congress adult division (ABC, now the USBC – United States Bowling Congress). Levine served as one of Tom’s key coaches/mentors throughout his bowling career. Two other bowlers that also had an influence on Milton as he developed his game were Earl Ratliff, a local standout at Skyway lanes, known for his steadiness, and PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony, for his command of the game through the smooth delivery and efficiency with which he executed each shot. Milton defeated Anthony in a PBA finals match on national television some years later when he claimed his second national title.
