Thomas Hubert Hume (born March 29 1953) is an American former professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies from 1977 until 1987. Hume was selected by the Reds at the 16th selection in the first round of the 1972 draft (Secondary phase).

Hume was injured in his knee, and made his last appearance during the season in 1982 on the 26th of July and recorded an saving against the Cubs. The years 1983 and 1984 proved to be not the best seasons for Hume when he struggled to get back to his best after knee surgery. He did not return to his role as a closer for the Reds.

The 2006 season was Hume’s 11th consecutive season as the Reds bullpen coach. He was named to his current position in January 1996. He was serving as interim pitching coach because regular pitching coach Vern Ruhle was absent with cancer (Multiple myeloma). Ruhle died in January 2007. Prior to Ruhle’s death, Dick Pole was signed to be the pitching coach for the Reds, and Ruhle was assigned to help with the minor leagues. Hume then went back to being the bullpen coach.

Hume continued the success of his Fireman of the Year season with another strong season during the strike-shortened season in 1981. He posted 9-4 records with an impressive 3.46 ERA and chalking up 13 saves. Hume started off with an impressive start to the season of 1982 and was heading into the All- Star break in 3rd place with the National League with 16 saves. Hume was selected for the National League All-Star team and scored his first Save for the NL in an 4-0 win over The American League.

Hume continued his breakout year in 1979 with possibly the most successful year of his professional career the year 1980. Hume had 9-10 records, but had an impressive 2.56 ERA and recorded 25 saves. He also played with a National League high 62 games. Hume was recognized with the title of the The National League’s Player of the Year by The Sporting News (sharing the award with Rollie Fingers).

Hume became a household name during the 1979 season with the Reds after manager John McNamara began using Hume exclusively from the bullpen in the later portion of July. Hume took advantage of the situation by registering 15 Saves in the final 10-weeks of season. He finished second in the battle with J. R. Richard of the Houston Astros for the National League lead, with an impressive 2.76 ERA.

Hume rebounded back to form in 1985 with a solid season as a setup man in the Reds bullpen, however he was dealt after the season to the Philadelphia Phillies along with Gary Redus in exchange for John Denny. Hume rewarded the Phillies with a solid 1986 season sporting a 4-1 record and 2.77 ERA in 46 appearances. Hume, however, slumped again in 1987 and was dealt back to the Reds in midseason, finishing out his career where he started.
