The art that used the comic book of Schulz, Peanuts to serve as the subject topic began, and were replaced by the skeleton as well as nature-related artworks in the year 1988. The idea was conceived by Everhart at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the artist was undergoing multiple operations for stage 4 colon and liver cancer during August of 1988. Everhart remembers lying in an inpatient bed in a room with enough flowers to start the shop of florists, stacks of art books, and an assortment of Peanuts comic strips, which were sent at his request by the Schulz. The light that poured in from the window seemed to project the latest images of his upcoming Schulz inspired artworks onto the wall. Every single image that Everhart paints are derived in some way of Schulz’s Peanuts comic strips.
In 1991, Schulz and United Media drafted a legal agreement to allow Everhart to use subject matter from Schulz’s Peanuts strip in his art for “the term of his life”.
In 1992, Pigpen’s Dirtballs, a 72″ x 128″ painting, was filmed with the artist in progress for the unaired CBS special “The Fabulous Funnies”. A series of four lithographs were published in 1996 and a series of four more lithographs entitled, To Every Dog There Is A Season followed in 1997. Over the next ten years S2 Art editions and Tom Everhart would create an astonishing body of lithography work consisting of over seventy-four lithographs.
In 1980 Everhart was first introduced to the cartoonist Charles M. Schulz at Schulz’s studios in Santa Rosa, California. Just a few weeks before the encounter, Everhart, having absolutely no experience in cartooning became working as a freelancer that required him draw and submit Peanuts drawings in Schulz’s office. Making the same sketches and research for his large-scale skeleton/ nature-based artworks, he exploded some of the cartoonist’s comic strips in a twenty-five-foot-long space in his office that eliminated the lines of the perimeter in the cardboard box leaving only the impressions from the cartoonist. The pen-strokes of the painter that were now larger that life- sized specks – reconstructed into painterly brush-strokes. They were translated into a language was incredibly connected to Everhart’s way of communicating and expression. Incredibly impressed by Schulz’s line drawing, he was able recreate the line art nearly exactly. This resulted in him being astonished Schulz during their meeting. At this point, that Everhart expressed his fascination with Schulz’s line art style and they began their connection of friendship as well as line art education.

Everhart began his undergraduate studies at Yale School of Art and Architecture in the year 1970. In 1972, he was a participant on an individual research course with Earl Hoffman at St. Mary’s College. Then he returned to Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1974, where the final stage of his studies was completed in 1976. Following that, he completed graduate studies in the Musee de l’Orangerie, in Paris.
Everhart was a professor of Life Drawing and Painting, briefly , from 1979 to 1980 from 1979 to 1980, at Antioch College.
