Tom Daly (born July 26 1954) is a prominent American politician who is currently serving as a member of the California State Assembly. Daly is a Democrat serving in the 69th Assembly District, which covers the central region of Orange County, including the cities of Santa Ana, Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Orange.

In the 1992 mayoral election, Daly defeated then-Mayor Fred Hunter by 57 percent to 43 percent. The key issue in the election was an unpopular citywide utility tax that was backed by the then-Mayor Hunter and fiercely opposed by Daly when he was a City Council member. The mayor’s re-election in 1994 set the record for most votes given to the Anaheim Mayor.

Daly defeated Bruce Peotter, a Newport Beach attorney and recording document executive, by a margin of 53.9% to 46.1%. The office was left vacant by the death of Gary Granville, who had introduced a number of innovations to the department and merged the clerk’s department and the recorder’s office in 1995.

In 1997, the Anaheim City Council took the unprecedented step of hiring a special prosecutor Ravi Mehta to investigate alleged campaign violations during the 1996 election. Only two out of the five-member council approved the hiring after the Anaheim City Attorney refused to file charges saying the allegations against Daly and Councilmember Irv Pickler were unfounded.

As mayor, Daly oversaw a billion-dollar expansion of the Anaheim Resort area, including the expansion of the Disneyland Resort with Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney as well as an expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center. As a result of these changes the tourism industry has grown exponentially in Anaheim and resulted in the creation of an increase in jobs and City revenues. The hotel bed tax grew to $28.7 millions in the years 1991-1992, and then $57.7 million in 2001-2002. Daly was also in charge of the construction and expansion of Angel Stadium. In his capacity as Mayor Daly was in charge, Daly was also the manager of Angel Stadium. Anaheim Angels won the 2002 World Series.
