Gregory Nash (born February 16 1982) nicknamed “Toe” or “Big Toe” is a former professional player of the game. The minor league player played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now Rays) organization in 2001. At the height of 6’5 inches (1.96 m) and weighting 200 pounds (100 kg), Nash received his nickname because of the size of his 18 (US) shoe size.

Despite legal problems, including an arrest for a felony robbery, Nash was able to attend winter training for the Devil Rays in 2001. They were assigned to extended spring training and later on to Princeton Devil Rays of the Rookie-level Appalachian League in 2001, playing alongside the future Major Leaguer Jonny Gomes. In his debut season, Nash hit .240 with 28 runs batted in over 47 games, and was deemed to be a long-term initiative for the team because of his absence of formal education.

“The Story of Toe Nash” was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter on June 27, 2014. The feature recounted the then 32-year-old Nash being reunited with Benny Latino, and his return to the Sugar Cane League.

In the words of Latino, Nash “couldn’t read, couldn’t write…Just wasn’t ready to function in society…with an education and social skills of a kid about thirteen years old.” After returning to Louisiana after the season of 2001, Nash spent nearly nine months in prison in 2002 for an aggravated and statutory rape after being accused of having sex with the girl who was 15. After the charges of aggravated rape were dismissed, Nash agreed to a plea bargain and was handed an indefinite suspension of 10 years. Nash was released from jail in September 2002. Devil Rays released Nash in September 2002, a day following his release from prison.

Nash comes originally from Sorrento, Louisiana. His mother left him after at the age of 12 as did his dad Charles “Tuttie” Payton raised Nash along and his older sister Joanna in a trailer. Payton was the one who taught Nash to hit when he was a kid by using old bottle caps and socks in place of baseballs. He was kicked out of two schools due to fights, and then dropped out completely from school after being suspended due to a fight in the 8th grade. In 1994 , at 12 years old, Nash played in the Dixie Youth Tournament, a Little League tournament in Hammond, Louisiana. At 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 meters) and carrying 140 pounds (64 kg) He knocked out 17 of the 21 batters that he faced with 70-mile-per-hour (110 km/h) fastball. He also struck two homers. Tampa Bay Devil Rays scout Benny Latino, a former college athlete from Southeastern Louisiana University whose hometown is Hammond and he watched the game and took note of the game to search at Nash in the near future in the event that he was a top player during high school. Because he was not in high school,, Nash fell into obscurity and Latino searched for seven years for Nash.

In lieu of a educational experience, Nash was employed in his uncle’s sugar cane fields when he was 16 together with the father. Nash played in games against local high schools as well as in a semi-professional league of baseball as well as an open tryout with The Pittsburgh Pirates. When he was 18 Latino was able to find Nash participating in this semi-pro league also known as The Sugar Cane League, featuring minor leaguers and amateurs. In a game played in Tangipahoa the scout saw Toe smashing 400-foot (120 meters) at-bats from each side and throwing 93 miles an hour (150 km/h) from the mound. Nash was a part of the Devil Rays brought Nash to their minor league camp in Princeton, West Virginia, to take part in a practice in front of the director of scouting Dan Jennings. Nash was a pitcher in the upper 80s, averaging 95 miles/hour (153 kilometers/h). Nash also hit a soaring home runs that drew the comparison of Yankee famous Babe Ruth for his power. Following Nash was left out of the year 2000 Major League Baseball Draft, the Devil Rays signed him for the sum of $30,000 as a signing bonus. They assigned him to the fall league which he played in the outfield along with Josh Hamilton and Carl Crawford. Nash’s agent Larry Reynolds, introduced Nash to his brother Harold Reynolds, an ESPN analyst and former Major League infielder. He invited Nash to join a baseball camp located in Los Angeles in February 2001. In the camp, Nash worked out with MLB players, such as Tony Gwynn, Barry Bonds, Eddie Murray, and Alvin Davis. Harold Reynolds also discussed Nash on TV. Others thought the story brought back memories of the hoax of Sidd Finch.

After being released by the Rays, the Cincinnati Reds signed Nash in the 2002–03 offseason. The club voided his contract for unspecified legal reasons, believed to be a bar fight for which Nash was arrested. Nash was arrested again in 2005 for a parole violation, and was charged for drug possession, leading him to serve the full 10 years of his previously suspended jail sentence. Nash was released from prison in November 2013. He was arrested again, however, in 2015 on drug charges.
