Ricketts graduated with an undergraduate degree in economics from Loyola University Chicago in 1994 and then studied at Booth School of Business at the Chicago University Booth School of Business. Ricketts quit Booth before completing his MBA requirements and began working as an investment manager at the New York-based startup Knight Securities.

In May 2016, Ricketts was chosen as an at-large member of the Illinois delegation to the Republican National Convention. During the tail end of the general election, Ricketts participated in fundraisers in Chicago for Trump’s candidacy and helped to raise money for the pro-Trump super PACs 45 Committee and Future 45, raising over $66 million.
