He also wrote the short story collection he co-wrote with other authors Halo Evolutions: Essential Tales of the Halo Universe together alongside Karen Traviss, Eric Nylund as well as other authors that was published in November of 2009.
In July 2010 he published an audiobook, The Alchemist and The Executioness, with Paolo Bacigalupi. These two works were published as separate print books in January 2011.
As of September 2011, Buckell is working on a stand-alone novel titled Infringement, adapted from his short story “A Jar of Goodwill,” which was originally published in Clarkesworld. The novel will be published by Tor, sometime after the independent release of Apocalypse Ocean.
The first novel he wrote, Crystal Rain, was published in February 2006 by Tor Books. The sequel, Ragamuffin was published in 2007, and was also nominated for the prestigious Nebula award in the same year. Sly Mongoose, his twelfth novel, came out in August of 2008. His first collection of short stories, Tides from the New Worlds was released in a limited edition signed by the author book by Wyrm Publishing in April 2009.

Buckell was a member of Clarion in 1999. Shortly after, the writer made his first sale, “Fish Merchant”, to Scott Edelman at Science Fiction Age. The story ran in the March 2000 issue. Around the date of the sale the story “In Orbite Medievali” won an annual contest for Writers of the Future. Since then, his short stories have been published in various places such as journals like Analog and Nature as well as his collection of anthologies New Voices in Science Fiction, Men Writing Science Fiction As Women and the anthologies So Long Been Dreaming.
In 2008, he donated his archive to the department of Rare Books and Special Collections at Northern Illinois University.
