He runs his own business Frere-Jones Type and teaches typeface design at the Yale School of Art MFA program.

Among his typefaces are Gotham which was used by the Obama 2008 presidential campaign, and Archer which has been used by Martha Stewart Living and Wells Fargo.
Many of Frere-Jones’ typefaces are extremely large families designed for professional users, for instance Mallory which as of 2019 had 110 styles. Organisations that commissioned work from Frere-Jones have included GQ magazine, the Whitney Museum, the Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living and the Essex Market. In 2014 German type designer Erik Spiekermann, who published Frere-Jones’ first typeface, described him as “one of the two or three best type designers in the world”.
He left Font Bureau in 1999. resigned from Font Bureau to return to New York, where he started working for Jonathan Hoefler who was later which was rebranded as Hoefler & Frere-Jones in 2005. As they worked together, the two worked in projects with The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living, Nike, Pentagram, GQ, Esquire magazine, The New Times, Business 2.0, and The New York Times Magazine. In 2014, Frere-Jones stopped working with Hoefler and brought a lawsuit against Hoefler which was settled with an out of court settlement later that year. Then, he founded his own business, Frere-Jones Type, which introduced its first retail family, Mallory, in 2015.

Many of FrereJones designs of the 1990s, including Reactor was a striking design and expressive in his “grunge typography” style of the time. Some were designed specifically for Neville Brody. But he also stated in a 1994 piece in which he said that “grunge has firmly dated itself and many are already tired of it.” A review in 2012 written by Christopher Hamamoto described Frere- Jones’ later work as being built upon “formality and practicality”, and an article in Businessweek article noted that Frere-Jones later typefaces was generally favored “a cleaner style based on historic typefaces”. Frere-Jones’ Font family Gotham was inspired by the the lettering of New York public buildings, and his subsequent sans-serif family Mallory was designed to appear in concept “autobiographical”, referring to his British family, and was designed to combine the best features from British typography with those of American typography.
After obtaining the BFA in 1992 from the Rhode Island School of Design He was hired by Font Bureau in Boston, becoming the Senior Designer. He designed a variety of the fonts that Font Bureau’s most recognized, including Interstate. He was appointed to in the Yale School of Art faculty in 1996 and is a professor of the design of type at Yale alongside Matthew Carter and Nina Stossinger.
In 2006, Frere-Jones received the Gerrit Noordzij Prize, an award given by The Royal Academy of Art (The Hague) to honor innovations in type design. In 2013 he received the AIGA Medal and won the National Design Award for Communication Design from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2019.
