Tipu Sultan is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 5, 1967 in Devanahalli, Karnataka, India. Tipu Sultan (born around. 1973) is a Bangladeshi freelance investigative journalist who won the CPJ International Press Freedom Award in 2002. The journalist was the subject of a highly media-covered attack by a local political figure that nearly killed him.

While Sultan tried to bring legal charges against Hazari and his attackers, the local police did not investigate or take the complaint up until they were the need to investigate was prompted by a court ruling. Hazari claimed that he was not involved in the incident. After a change in the government in the latter part of 2001, the Police began investigating the incident. On the 16th of April, 2003, just 28 months after the initial incident, Hazari and twelve other individuals were arrested. But eight of the 13 suspects escaped including Hazari who was disqualified from his position in the general election, as well as a large portion of his political influence. Hazari was wanted on murder charges in a separate case, and was in 2003 sentenced in absentia, without trial, to life in prison. The theory is that he left for India.

In the beginning of January 2001 Tipu Sultan was in the Feni District where he investigated an arson attack at Omarpur’s Sultana Memorial Junior Girls’ School in Omarpur. The school was being built had just been completed. On January 17 He filed a complaint to United News of Bangladesh, an independent wire service which implicated Joynal Hazari, an Awami member of the League of Nations who was known as “the Godfather of Feni”.

As per CPJ Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) the assault on Sultan was “symbolic of the rising tide of violence directed against the press in Bangladesh”, which led to a international and national outrage. On November 2, 2002 Sultan received with the CPJ International Press Freedom Award, “an annual recognition of courageous journalism”. Sultan has also been a finalist in the Reporters sans Frontieres 2001 Fondation in France Award, which went to Reza Alijani, a journalist from Iran.

Bidan Majumder Sumon, one of the remaining suspects and the only person ever arrested for the attack, soon was released on bail. Sultan and his family received threats that they would be killed if they continued to pursue the case, causing Amnesty International to call for an “Urgent Action” letter- writing campaign on their behalf. A colleague and witness to the beating, Bakhtiar Islam Munna, was reportedly also threatened with death if he testified against Sultan’s attackers. In the days leading up to the hearing, Munna was the subject of two murder attempts. In the second, a bomb was thrown at him near the entrance of his home. Munna escaped unharmed—the bomb only damaged the road—but withdrew his offer to testify. As Hazari could not be apprehended, the trial did not proceed.
