Then, in November of 2009 Tennent made a ecumenical declaration dubbed The Manhattan Declaration calling on evangelicals, Catholics and Orthodox not to adhere to the laws and rules that permit gay marriage, abortions, and other issues that are against their religious convictions.

Tennent did his research under the guidance of Professor John Brockington, Dr James Cox and Dr James Cox, and Professor Andrew Walls, and his research was focused on the fast expanding churches in the West. The research of his Ph.D. dissertation was revised and released as a book in the year 2000, under the name Building Christianity on Indian Foundations.

He was elected to his current post as president of Asbury Seminary on February 17, 2009 and his tenure began on July 1, 2009. Tennent succeeded Ellsworth Kalas as president of Asbury. He continues to serve as a visiting professor at the Luther W. New Jr. Theological College of Dehradun, India where he has taught each summer since 1988.
