Tim Z. Hernandez is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on February 16, 1974 in Dinuba, California, United States. Hernandez’s study of her research on the Los Gatos DC-3 crash near Los Gatos, California which killed 32 people, mostly Mexican farmers was the basis for his success in his campaign to erect memorials at the site of the mass grave. He released the book entitled the book, All They Will Call You, about the crash and subsequent investigation. Hernandez was among four finalist for the first Freedom Plow Award from the Split This Rock Foundation for his efforts to locate those who died in the crash in Los Gatos.
Hernandez’s shows have been performed in the Getty Center Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Dixon Experimental Theater in NYC, The Loft Literary Center, Intersection for the Arts, Stanford University, and at the Jack Kerouac School, among other places. In 2000, he was invited by United Way of Greater Los Angeles as well as The National Fanny Mae Foundation to create and stage an original performance about homelessness and poverty. From 2006 to 2011, he was a part of Poets & Writers Inc. as well as The California Center for the Book at UCLA providing writing classes to communities that are marginalized across all of California.
In March 2013, NPR hosted Hernandez, in regards to a new rendition of the song Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos). With the help of Lance Canales Lance Canales & The Flood, whose parents were also migrant farmworkers, the two released a version of the song that included the names of those who perished in the 1948 Los Gatos plane crash. After months of research, Hernandez was able to discover the identities of these people within the Fresno County Hall of Records, in Fresno, CA. As stated by Hernandez, within this interview,
As a teenager, Hernandez was involved in acting along with visual and performing arts. In his teens He was primarily interested in painting. He was introduced to an artist named Joseph De La Cruz in 1990 and started his first formal training at 16 years old. Tim Z. Hernandez (born on 16 February 1974) is a famous American poet, writer, and performer. His first collection of poems, Skin Tax (Heyday, 2004), received the 2006 American Book Award, and his debut novel, Breathing, in Dust (Texas Tech University Press, 2010), was awarded the Premio Aztlan Literary Prize, and was a finalist in the California Book Award. As of 2011, Hernandez has been named as one of the sixteen New American Poets by the Poetry Society of America.
In the early 1990s Hernandez learned about poetry and performing during his time at CSU Long Beach under the supervision under the guidance of Juan Felipe Herrera. There he also worked with poets like June Jordan, Li Young Lee and performance artists like Guillermo Pena as well as Commedia dell’arte.
Later in 2013, Hernandez’s research of the 1948 Los Gatos plane crash culminated in his successful drive to provide a proper monument at the mass grave of the 28 migrant farmworkers who perished nearly nameless, which had inspired the song Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos). He has since published a related non-fiction book, All They Will Call You.
