He attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey on a baseball scholarship. He played baseball for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Big East Conference. He studied in journalism/media studies. After his Junior season, Sweeney was selected by the Montreal Expos as their 20th pick in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.
