He has been an Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2006 and represents his electorate in Tarneit through 2014 before moving to Werribee following that. He has been Treasurer of Victoria within the Andrews Ministry since December 2014. Pallas previously was the Minister of Roads and Ports and Minister for Major Projects in the Brumby Ministry from 2010 to 2010.
In the year 2010, Pallas faced controversy when while initiating a road safety initiative, he referred to Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton as a “dickhead”. Hamilton was caught by police for the act of hoon driving in the $160,000 Mercedes on a Friday night.
In May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic prominent Melbourne radio host Neil Mitchell was reported as saying Pallas was “on his knees” before China.
In his time as a minister during his time, he implemented a variety of initiatives to enhance traffic flow on major Victorian freeways, including one of them being the Monash CityLink West Gate Upgrade. The month of February saw him announced an investigation of $5 million into the flow of traffic along Hoddle Street, which runs between CityLink along with the Eastern Freeway. The study had previously been made public within the Victorian Transport Plan in 2008. In March, he endorsed the ban of trucks who use the right-hand side of busy freeways with three lanes. The RACV was a vocal advocate to ban the lane for the past two years, garnering support from the “overwhelming 83% of motorists [it] surveyed”.
