McDonald played for his former school, Edison High School in Fresno and coached his twins, Timothy McDonald, Jr. and Tevin McDonald. McDonald was dismissed from Edison High during the 2010 soccer season but he came back in 2011 and put Edison back at the top of the list. McDonald quit Edison High in 2012 and was appointed a second coach at Fresno State. After a single season in Fresno State Mcdonald was signed as the DB coach with the New York Jets under Rex Ryan. He was a follower of Ryan on to coach his team, the Buffalo Bills in 2015, in which he was defense backs’ head coach for the next two seasons.

He was a student at his time at the University of Southern California (USC) and studied business administration at the school that today is called the Marshall School of Business. In his three years as a starter, he recorded 325 tackles as well as 11 interceptions. He was selected for 3 Pro Bowls, and was named All-Pro twice playing for the Cardinals. McDonald was signed as a free-agent by the San Francisco 49ers on April 7th in 1993. The year 1993 was the time that McDonald was able to perform again at a high-level, being selected to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. In that time McDonald gave $2,000 for each 49ers win in the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Bay Area which resulted in $22,000 for these organisations. When he was in 1994, McDonald was instrumental in helping the 49ers take home Super Bowl XXIX. In that season, McDonald scored 76 tackles, 2 interceptions, 7 passes defensively blocked, 1 forced fumble, one recovery of a fumble, and two defensive touchdowns. All while being part of the San Francisco secondary that sent three members in the Pro Bowl, SS Tim McDonald, FS Merton Hanks along with NFL Defender of the Year, CB Deion Sanders. The season that they played together, along together with safety free Merton Hanks the two would, together, make one of the top security tandems of NFL history when they teamed with 7 Pro Bowls and five All-Pro selections between 1994 and 1998 over five seasons. McDonald continued to be a star throughout the entirety of his 49ers career, until he retired following the 1999 season.
