When he was at the University of Michigan, Howes was given the task of creating an all-campus directory service using the X.500 standard. X.500 directories provide information about networks resources, making the process of finding them and using them more convenient for network administrators and users. However accessing X.500 records necessitated a complete X.500 server, and there was never the X.500 client. This resulted in Howes to collaborate on the creation of DIXIE the directory client that can access X.500 directories (as as contributing significant improvements to enhance the efficiency of Quipu directories). This work was the foundation for his Ph.D. dissertation and was the foundation of LDAP the standard-based variant of DIXIE for servers and clients. The first public version of LDAP was released in 1993.
In 1996, shortly after joining Netscape as director administrator, Howes received the honor of being named among the top 25 Network Technology Drivers by Network Computing magazine. The year 1997 was the year that LDAP version 3 won the PC Magazine’s Technical Excellence in Networking award. Howes was also recognized as a Netscape Fellow Netscape’s most prestigious engineering honour, and then elevated to Chief Technology Officer at Netscape’s Server Products Division.
In 2012, Howes co-founded Know Yourself, a public benefit corporation based in Oakland, California, dedicated to making self literacy a vital part of early education. The company designs and sells products that teach kids about their anatomy, physiology, and psychology, including activity kits, books, comics, and various apparel and lifestyle products.
