Goss became Director of Engineering in January of 2011. He was promoted to Director in the month of February 2013 when McLaren announced the resignation of Paddy Lowe to Mercedes F1 in 2014, Goss was appointed Technical Director. He was the technical director until the year 2018 when the position was vacated. post and succeeded with James Key.

In 2005, he was named Chief Engineer of the McLaren MP4-21. He was also the head of his engineering team that developed the Adrian Newey designed 2006 car. After a few races , it was evident that the MP4-21 wasn’t as fast like its predecessor which was the MP4-20, despite a noticeable improvements in its reliability. McLaren was not able to finish a race in the entire season long, the first time since 1996.
